KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan, Oct. 22, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — The Asia Pacific Circular Economy Roundtable, the largest event of its kind in Taiwan, entered its third day today. Organized by the Taiwan Circular Economy Network, supervised by the "Ministry of Economic Affairs" and "Environmental Protection Administration", the event arranged five theme-based field visits, to Pingtung, Kaohsiung, Tainan, and Taichung to show examples of the circular economy in action. Participants will consequently better understand how the circular economy can be successful and generate business opportunities in startups, small- and medium-sized enterprises, and state-run enterprises in a variety of sectors ranging from agriculture to industry.
With a focus on the Bio Cycle, a visit is made to the Taisugar Co. DongHaiFeng Livestock Farm, which mixes solid and liquid pig waste with agricultural refuse from nearby farms. Fermentation leads to biogas generation and composting, successfully creating a green energy livestock farm that achieves the goals of livestock production and environmental sustainability.
The Pingtung site visit focuses on the "Bio Cycle" at Taiwan Sugar Corp.’s DongHaiFeng Livestock Farm, which is a pig farm with modern cultivation facilities. The farm features a negative pressure water curtain and an automated feeding system, along with a rainwater/sewage wastewater system. Meanwhile, heat reflection and highly efficient solar panels effectively enhance energy efficiency. An improved pig waste collection system, in conjunction with co-digestion system technology introduced from Austria, mixes solid and liquid pig waste with agricultural waste from nearby farms. Fermentation leads to biogas generation and composting, successfully creating a green energy livestock farm that achieves the goals of livestock production and environmental sustainability.
In Kaohsiung, which is a hub of heavy industry, the visit focuses on "Industrial Symbiosis". In the Linhai Industrial Park, with China Steel Corporation (CSC) at its core, participants can observe energy integration and exchange among the 14 plants. The high-temperature steam generated by the steelworks is transported through pipelines to provide heat energy for other plants. This has generated over NT$2 billion in revenues for CSC, and it has reduced the overall use of and pollution created by coal-fired boilers in the industrial zone. Another example is CHC Resources Corp., which recycles by-products in the steelmaking process and applies the high quality, extra strong basic oxygen furnace slag to ecofriendly construction materials or asphalt that increases surface durability and road safety.
Like Kyoto, Japan, Tainan is not only an ancient cultural capital, but also a manufacturing center. The organizers have thus arranged two separate thematic site visits — Metal Cycle and Textile Cycle. In metal cycle, Solar Applied Material Technology Corp. effectively recycles precious metals from discarded integrated circuits by refining them into industrial-grade high-purity (99.999%) gold, turning electronics waste into an urban mine. This creates costs advantages and ushers in an environmentally friendly raw material pipeline.
Taiwan is a major textile supplier to renowned apparel brands and has 21 million tonnes of annual cloth leftover. Participants in this tour can visit the Cloth Bank to understand how Tainan textile firms such as Tainan Enterprises, HerMin Textile, and Everest Textile cooperate with the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and the Foundation of Historic City Conservation and Regeneration to collect excess inventories of fabrics from companies for use by local designers and students of fashion design. The stop at Everest Textile shows how this company has instituted optimized manufacturing processes and circular systems in its factory. This is improving resource productivity and creating competitiveness.
The Taichung site visit focuses on the plastics industry, which has a prominent presence in this region. Participants can visit DaFon Environmental Technology to understand the post-consumer recycled plastics become the materials again. There is also a stop at Living Fountain Plastic Industrial to see how this firm has developed technology to produce the world’s first bottle pump made with recycled material. Another stop is the Plastic Industrial Development Center, which shows its technological expertise that has helped make Taiwan an important supplier of plastic recycled pellets to the world.
